Wonderfully detailed miniature brass models

miniature-brass-solar-engine.jpg

In the picture above, on the right, you can see a small, working, solar-powered, brass engine. (The spectacles are to provide a proper appreciation for the size of the model.)

These are the work of Syzmon Klimek from Poland. He has a website with pictures and videos of his astonishing work. The 'Internet Craftsmanship Museum' also has a page about him.

I have embedded one video of the brass engine below.

Gaming goodness

little-big-planet-las-vagueness.jpg

Half-term has gone and I expect I've been playing some games on the console (I'm writing this in November 2009) and one of the games is likely to have been Little Big Planet. (Wikipedia entry here.)

A lovely game that is vastly enjoyable due to the ability to create levels AND to play levels created by other players. And, by golly, some are incredibly inventive and many - like the one shown above - are humourous.

This article at BoingBoing discusses the game and its appeal but best of all, it has some great pictures of both designs and finished levels.

The Portable Film Festival

portable-fim-festival-screenshot.jpg

This is a nice site to feature for the half-term holiday - the Portable Film Festival.

They feature a new film every day and all their material is freely downloadable to PCs, laptops, netbooks, smartphones, etc. - hence the "portable" in the title.

I only came across this website towards the end of last year and thought I'd save it for posting now as they are likely to be opening up a new competition for budding film makers. Even if you don't feel ready to enter your own work it should give you some good ideas.

I'm guessing at the timing for this competition from a date - 1st March 2009 - in their current site.

What if ...?

What if the Earth had rings like Saturn?

That is the question posed - and answered - by 3D artist Roy Prol in this YouTube video which is also embedded below.

I originally came across this item via Buzzfeed here.

More 80's sci-fi

terminator-movie-poster-french.jpg

The article last week about 'smart bullets' introduced the 1984 sci-fi film, 'Runaway'.

It seems only right to follow that up with the film that effectively stole the year from it - 'Terminator'. Despite being made on a much lower budget it proved a surprise hit and has gone on to spawn several sequels, a TV series and computer games.

You can see this film as part of a 'Wired' list of overlooked sci-fi flicks from the 80's. It includes films such as 'Terminator', 'Aliens', 'The Abyss', 'Tron' and 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure',

I wonder what films from the "noughties" we'll be making lists about in the 2020's?

Additional note, February 2010
I originally 'planned' this posting back in October 2009 and had no idea that James Cameron would have yet another successful film on his hands with the 3D "Avatar".

Space Shuttle - penultimate flight for Endeavour

STS-130 patch
This year will see the last flights by NASA's Space Shuttle after almost 30 years of service. There are just five missions left.

STS-130 is due to takeoff on Sunday delivering two major items - the 'Tranquility module' and the 'Cupola' - to the International Space Station.

With a planned lift-off at 4:39 am (local time, 9:39 am GMT) this will also be the last night launch for the Shuttle and consequently the last chance to see such a spectacular sight.

At the time I am writing this entry the final shuttle missions are due on :

  • 7th February 2010 ... this Sunday
  • 18th March 2010
  • 14th May 2010
  • 29th July 2010
  • 16th September 2010

Best invention - smart bullet

My personal favourite from the Time magazine '50 Best Inventions of 2009' (as featured in the previous post here) was, #46, the Smart Bullet.

   a smart bullet

I like it NOT for the carnage it might create but because it reminded me of a rather old - and cheesy - film from the 1980's, "Runaway".

Along with Tom Selleck's moustache, Cynthia Rhodes big hair and shoulder pads, Gene Simmons (over-the-top rock star of 'Kiss' fame) maniacal bad-guy laughter, it had 'smart' bullets that keyed in to the bodyheat signature of a person and could chase them round corners.

You can see a trailer for the film embedded here from YouTube.

The Wikipedia entry for the film is here while this link (see the bottom half of the page) finds the film listed in the middle of '15 Awesomely Stupid Movie Weapons' - which is an interesting read in its own right. And to complete this set of links here's Scifylove.com's take on the film.

Best Inventions of 2009

ares_rocket.jpg

Time magazine posted their list of '50 Best Inventions of 2009'. Their winner was the Ares rocket you can see in the picture on the left.

Take a look at the others in the list here and decide for yourself if they have things in the correct order. Maybe you can think of an invention that they should have included.
I realise that it is now a whole month into 2010 but I'm actually creating this article in November 2009. I thought I'd leave this to allow time for Time's readers to post their own ratings which might make for interesting reading.

Extra : today is a palindrome day - 01022010.
