Wallpaper

wallpaper 1

You are probably thinking that this post is about wallpapers for computer desktop backgrounds - WRONG.

Bradbury & Bradbury are a company in California that create fine-art wallpapers for real walls in real buildings. The picture above is one of their "Atomic Age" range.

They have quite a number of almost invariably stunning designs - take a look round their site.

Here are a few more pictures from their site .....

Computer memory - a history

selectron memory unit
The picture on the left shows computer memory from 1946. You'll have to follow the link below to find out just how much (or rather - how little) data it could actually store.

The Royal Pingdom has a nice article showing computer storage methods through the years.

The desktop in 1983

small image of Atari desk from 1983

The picture above (click on it for a larger version) is from a scan of a photograph taken in 1983. It shows someone's desk with an Atari 800 personal computer (quite 'cutting-edge' at the time) and a whole slew of peripherals.

Cassette tape storage but also two different floppy drives, a dot-matrix printer and what might also be a telephone modem.

Originally from Boing-Boing.

New coinage

Britain is getting a newly-designed set of coins. You should begin to find them in your change as the banks start to replace older coins over time.

ten pence cointwo pence coin
one pence coinfive pence cointwenty pence coin
fifty pence coin

There are several interesting things to notice about them :
one pound coin
  • only the £1 coin has the 'complete' design on it
  • the other coins have part of the design
     - together they form the whole design
  • the value of the coin is NOT shown in numbers
  • the familar 'beading' around the edges has gone from the £1 coin

Drummer-boy robot

A very cute little robot here. It moves around, finds objects, tries them out for their sound and then creates a little syncopation with them. After you have a look at the video below try visiting the site too and see how it was created.

Who knows, you might feel like trying something like this yourself over the holidays.

Picture stream

A post on the '2spare' list-site caught my eye and reminded me how useful the Flickr photo-management and sharing site can be.

castle-geyser-yellowstone.jpg

The picture above shows a geyser erupting. It is the Castle Geyser in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, USA.

Just one of many stunning pictures you can find just by going to the Flickr site and typing in a keyword - in this case "geyser".

Here are a few more pictures of geysers from the Flickr 'stream' that I quite liked. Clicking on the picture takes you to the original picture and there you can see other images uploaded by that person.
