Holiday post

This video has done the rounds recently. It reveals finally the reason why there was a flaw in the design of the Death Star (Star Wars) that allowed the rebels to destroy it.

Toothpaste ingredients

Colgate toothpaste

No matter your age, having clean, white teeth is important to help you feel confident about yourself.

But what are all those ingredients noted on the label? Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate? Carrageenan? Propylene Glycol?

Perhaps this article in Wired can help.

One-wheeled skateboard

Skateboard with one wheel - details

The picture above shows the underside of a homemade, one-wheeled skateboard. The electronics are the motor and control circuit that enable movement and balance. The designer has details here at 'Stuff' and some links to similar projects.

The board uses an Arduino micro-controller board which provides a very cheap and flexible platform for many electronic projects. You can obtain these marvels for under €20 currently from places such as :

You can read more about the Arduino here at MAKE Blog.

The video below is an embedded YouTube video showing the gadget in action.

Phone and e-paper

DoCoMo phone with e-paper keys

NTT - a Japanese telephone company - have shown some new phones.

They don't look very stylish but their special feature is the keys.

They are made from e-paper (electronic paper) which means they can have the icon they display changed.

The article at Tech-On tells more.

No doubt these will also get a style makeover before long.

Pinball mania

poster

Coming up over the weekend is the Pacific Pinball Exposition in Marin County, Alameda, California - sadly too far to just pop over for a visit really.

One exhibit that catches my attention is the Visible Pinball Machine built by Michael Schiess who has a set of pictures in a Flikr gallery.

Storing data - now and then

Most of you will have seen storage devices like those shown here on the left..

At the top is an SD (secure digital) card while below it is a USB (or flash) drive.

Both can store up to 1 Gigabyte of data - roughly 1,000,000,000 bytes.

20 years ago - in the mid-1980's - it took something a little larger, and more expensive, to store that much data.

Click here to see what it looked like.

Radiohead album

Seems that Radiohead are about to release a new album. You can order it from their website.

It says - nice cup of tea - seems obvious I giess

It's available as both a download from their site and a box-set containing CDs, vinyl and other goodies. The box-set is £40 but you can name your own price for the download which should be DRM-free.

Great news - and thanks to Boing-Boing and Xeni Jardin for the link.

I've "bumped" the posts along this week after coming across this item today.
