What's Your Room Like?

Music Thing weblog office picture

The author of the 'Music Thing' weblog (Tom Whitwell) recently issued a challenge to readers to show what their office/room looked like - probably to see if they are as cluttered or not.

You can see some of the replies to the original posting here.

31-port USB hub

usb-31-port-hub.jpg

If you have found yourself short of USB ports recently - and haven't we all - then you'll understand what led to this piece of homebrew hardware.

The link in the article is to a translation of a Japanese site - so make allowance for the weird English.

TechEblog had an article about the 'Top 10 Strangest Clocks' which gave me the idea for the last three posts. So today, here's the link to their list.

Bluetooth watch

Citizen watch with bluetooth

Staying with the time-keeping theme of last week we take a look at a watch today.

A Citizen watch with Bluetooth that can talk to your mobile phone and display incoming calls.

I don't think this one will last - why?

It's pretty ugly and in addition, by the time you've checked the watch, decided to accept the call, then gone to get the phone from wherever you keep it - the caller will have given up.

Just because we can doesn't always mean we should.

CRT clock

oscilloscope clock

Another clock today - this time based around the CRT tube from an old oscilloscope. The shape of the digits reminds me of the font used in the earlier DOS-machines.

Retro-Thing blog has more details.

Wikipedia has articles about oscilloscope and CRT if these terms are unfamiliar to you.

Cube clock

I rather like this clock which is in the shape of a cube.

As you can see from the picture the corner has three parts which behave like the hour, minute and second hands.

Not very expensive either.

Pinhole Camera

red pinhole cameraLinatree have a nice site which has some files to enable you to make your own pinhole camera.

If you go as far as taking pictures with it you could even send them in - on the correct day - to the Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day site.

I thought the links in this post would go well with the one earlier this week as you get the chance to make your own camera from (thick) paper - not quite as creative but the results could be.

In case the Linatree page is removed I include here links to my own copies of the files required (right-hand mouse click to save the files) :

Use any PAN film from Ilford or Neopan 100 from Fuji. You can also use any 35 mm film.

Paper sculptures

Richard Sweeney creates sculptures out of paper with only folds and scores. (His own site is here.)

You can also view some of them here at his Flikr site - wonderful.
