YouTube week - part 3

Clip from video with effects provided by Logitech webcam software

And to complete the week - this video is of an unknown-to-me young lady talking to her friend(s) about breaking up with her boyfriend. It became popular for a short while last week because it shows some of the effects in the newer Logitech webcam software. You can superimpose 'things' on a face which stay in place even when you move. Quite neat.

As an extra thought - always be careful about filming yourself and posting the results online. Why? Just look at those posters on the wall.

YouTube is one of the fastest-growing sites on the WorldWideWibble at the moment - which is why I decided to feature three clips from it this week.

YouTube week - part 2

Jason Garfield performs

Another video that got a lot of attention was this one of Jason Garfield juggling 5 balls to a Beatles song.

It was done in response to a video by Chris Bliss who performed to the same song - hence the title "Chris Bliss Diss Video".

YouTube week - part 1

clip from live action Simpsons trailer for Sky TV

Live-action version of the intro to 'The Simpsons'. This was a very popular clip a couple of weeks ago and I expect it was deliberately released to garner some interest in the new series which started on Sky soon after. Nicely done - and interesting to see the high-res version on TV too.

Two-stage spaceplane

XB-70 spaceplane image
Tuesday saw an article about a proposed plane - today is one that has been rumoured to be in action for some years.

But now information indicates it has been "cancelled".

Aviation Week & Space Technology has an article about it here.

The article mentions one of my favourite planes - the Lockheed SR-71 - the 'Blackbird'.

Have a look at this Gizmodo article about a new plane from Lockheed.

It's still on the drawing board but it might not be long before a prototype gets built.

UK starting to catch on to HD TV

hd-ready.jpg

The hype is starting to build up now with Sky, Telewest and the Beeb starting to try out HD broadcasting.

Soon there will be lots of people wanting to sell you HD-TV sets and other equipment - Sony are a good example.

There are many questions you need to ask the supplier, such as :

  • What is HDMI and has it got it?

  • Can it handle 1080i as well as 720p or does it just emulate it?

  • Can you daisy-chain the inputs or are you going to have to get one with several sockets?

  • Can you record to your DVR or are there DRM restrictions?
If you want to avoid buying a load of tosh then you'd better get some good background info - and the hdtv uk weblog is pretty good for this.

Extra - have just spotted a new Samsung digital camera (the 8 megapixel Digimax L85) has a HDMI connection to allow you to view your photos in HD on your TV.

It pays to do well

A Googler at playGoogle - yes, the search engine people - tend to only hire the brightest and hardest working types. They work at a place called the Googleplex.

In return they get a fantastic place to work - see these pictures at the Time magazine site.

If you have Google Earth then try this link to see the Google HQ in Mountain View, California.

If you have the Google Earth Community flag on then as you zoom out you'll spot quite a few other very well-known companies that are based in the same area.

Retro synth and stuff

Casio CZ-101 - an 8-channel synth and a calculator

The 'Retro Thing' weblog has quite a lot of interesting articles. A recent one features a very early digital synth produced by Casio which doubles as a calculator. The article says that these (and the CZ-1000) come up on eBay quite a bit so here are two links to check it out. NOTE When I tried this at the end of February I did find half-a-dozen items but there's no guarantee there will be any for sale when you try this out.

Drum machine

Radiohead drum set in studio
I was taking a peek at the Radiohead weblog - a curious mixture of seemingly random items plonked on the page - and came across this link to a drum machine.
If it's good enough for the band - it'll do for me.

Thanks to Music Thing for the original link to the Radiohead weblog.
