Hellraiser casemod

casemod in Hellraiser cube style
Partly casemod, partly decoration. Bit-Tech has this reasonably short article detailing construction of a 'Hellraiser' styled system.

Nice glowing head to be seen too.

Doom 3 casemod - update

New picture for Doom 3 casemod article
Lots of pictures in this link . . . .
. . . . . so watch out on dial-up.

Back in November I posted about this guy and his casemod based on Doom 3.

Take a look at how things are going now.

Buttons and icons

Gtmc-Knight has a massive collection of free-to-download icons like those shown above.

Neat and effective - you can visit Kalsey if you want somewhere simple to create your own too.

EXTRA - 4th April
Have just run across this site by Luca Zappa for making these neat little buttons - even better than Kalsey I think.

Live City

Live City video experimentTo quote from the 'J-Walk blog' where I first saw this link and then pinched the picture, Live City:

Live images from New York City traffic cameras are filtered through a digital ecology to create an ever-changing grid of pixels. Like the elements of the real city moving in front of us, each of these pixels interacts locally with their neighbouring pixels, just as the elements of the city do with their real-life physical neighbours.

What we see at first is a street and a skyline with moving cars - a landscape changing slowly but constantly, through day and night. If we just watch, this will continue in its own pace, but by clicking on the screen we can choose to collide with this reality, infusing the image with live colour from a different part of New York City: the neon lights of Times Square.

Like - yeah dude.

Free Clip Art

Something really useful today.

The Open Clip Art Library aims to collect and make available high-quality clip-art free for general use.

At the time of writing this post the latest zip file for download was over 27 MB in length. With more than 3200 images arranged in many different categories and sub-categories image selection is very easy. The files are in two main formats
  • svg - a vector system that some programs can handle
  • png - a common graphics format
Even if you cannot use the 'svg' format the 'png' files all seem to have transparent backgrounds which can easily be converted to 'gif' files and then used for web pages and the like.

And as you have probably guessed, the images on the left have all been plucked from the library.

The First Picture on the Web

To end the term - a week of postings related in one way or another to the general theme of graphics.

Wikipedia has a short article about the picture that it says was the first one ever published on the Web.

Rather than spoil it by linking directly to the picture you can see it for yourself and read how it came about.

l33t hax0r pwn5 LOTR

An awesome translation of "Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers" into leet-speak.

Here's a small example:

[Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas are in Fangorn Forest]
Legolas: "Teh White Wizard!"
Aragorn: "Ph34r!"
The White Wizard: "LOL, noobs."
Aragorn: "Wtf."
The White Wizard: "You want teh hobbits?"
Aragorn: "Where are they?"
The White Wizard: "LOL. They met teh pwnerer."
Aragorn: "Who are joo?"

**The white light fades, revealing Gandalf
Aragorn: "WTFOMGBSHAX!"
Gandalf: "Teh balrog was noob. He got pwned. I can dance all day, I can dance all day!"
Gandalf: "Boom! HEADSHOT!"
Gandalf: "I R GANDALF TEH GREY!"
Gandalf: "I R GANDALF TEH WHITE!"
Gimli: "FFS, make up your mind! ><"

And if you enjoyed that - and I guess some of you won't - then try his earlier work converting "Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring".

Dead Pixels

I wasn't going to post today but having added the item on Tuesday I thought I'd better 'balance' the week up with a little item after all.

LCD screens can suffer with 'dead' or inoperative pixels. For some, these can be downright annoying.

'Dead Pixel Buddy' is a small downloadable program available on the Laptop-Showcase site. Unzip it to a hard drive, then run it, no installation needed. It lets you try out your screen by setting it to one colour at a time. Any dead pixels are immediately seen.

Whether you can replace the screen depends on various factors, but at least you'll know.

National Science Week

National Science Week 2005 started on 11th March and runs to 20th March 2005. There are quite a few events connected with this celebration of Science.

One such project is Spaced Out which is intended to create the world's largest scale model of the Solar System here in the UK. You can read more about it via this BBC article.

And if you can't wait to be able to get out into the countryside to see the model then try this link to a site we posted about in mid-February on CCS-PK.

World of Stuart

I wasn't going to post today but last night (Monday) I came across this review of Gran Turismo 4 for PS2 and just had to post a link to it.

It's not only a really honest review of the game but it does make some other good points about the current state of gaming.

Quite long but worth the read - viewer discretion advised due to some strong language.

Einstein Year 2005

Born in 1879, Albert Einstein revolutionised the world with ideas first published in 1905 when he was just 26 years old.

Einstein Year 2005 has been chosen to celebrate his contribution and National Science Week 2005 takes place at the same time.

What's That Song?

The Science, Engineering & Technology (UK) site has some interesting items both news and games - try their crosswords.

But hidden away is this little quiz site - What's That Song?

When you go there a random artist will be chosen and you will get tested on your knowledge of their music. Small samples of their songs are played along with four possible answers.

Also quite neat is the ability to type in your own artist name and choose a test.

So ... how sad are you ... What's That Song by BUSTED?

Bi-pedal walking robots

The New Scientist has a nice article about some walking robots.

Although walking robots are not that new - for example Honda's Asimo has been around a while - these use far less energy to move, roughly the same as a human in fact.
