Freeduc - Linux on CD

For those of you who want to try Linux at home but do not want to mess up their existing Windows PC, we have already pointed you towards Knoppix.

'Freeduc' from Ofset (Organisation for Free Software in Education and Teaching) with support from UNESCO provides a downloadable CD image which you can 'burn' to create your own bootable CD.

The advantage of Freeduc is that it has many useful, educational and fun applications aimed at school students.

There are many other versions of "Live Linux" available via the Internet too and this excellent webpage has an extensive and easy-to-use list of them.

Not all PCs with CD-burners come bundled with software that can make use of 'iso' files, a common format for storing a CD disc image. So try these free programs which seem to do the job - but - USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. You may already have Windows Media Player v9 which includes CD creation features.

Something really useful to start the half-term - How Wide Is The World-Wide Web?

Hope you found that informative.

Watches for the hols

Perhaps some of you "dear" students should take a look at this site - 70's watches. Some real stylish bargains here AND they'll help you get to school on time - marvellous.

Perhaps your parents would like a nostalgia trip too - show 'em the A-M list and the N-Z selections.

For me I'd choose - in reverse order:
  1. the Alfa Romeo by Bivouac
  2. the Jacky Ickx Bullhead
  3. the Omega Chronoquartz

Exploring Footers

I'm still using tables for setting out so I ought to learn something from this article - "Exploring Footers" - which attempts to show how you CAN control them effectively with CSS.

This week we feature postings from 'A List Apart' a superb site that has excellent ideas about web design and development especially use of CCS, although it is not really for the beginner.

As it says on their 'About' page:

“For people who make websites - A List Apart explores the design, development, and meaning of web content, with a special focus on techniques and benefits of designing with web standards."

They also have RSS/XML feeds aplenty to choose from.

Mars Rover 3D pictures

The Spirit craft on Mars has a stereoscopic camera which sends pictures back to Earth. This site has a collection which you can view.

See if you can get hold of those Red-Blue cardboard specs they sometimes give away in magazines.

Explore the site for some other goodies too.

And don't forget the link we had last week - to the Mars Rover weblog site.

This week all links have been found via Boing Boing - a directory of wonderful things. It is an excellent weblog which is regularly updated with links to all sorts of stuff.

Fantastic Pinhole Camera

At this Czech site you can download the designs for a pinhole camera that looks like a proper 35mm camera - but is a simple pinhole device.

Here are some examples of pictures taken with a pinhole camera while you can read more about pinhole cameras here.

Nathan Sawaya and Lego

Sorry - I've managed to get another Lego item in here.

Here's a guy, Nathan Sawaya who works with Lego. This link from Boing-Boing was to his rendition of Han Solo (yes - from Star Wars) encased in carbonite.

GM cress to hunt landmines

This is an excellent story at Yahoo News revealing that Danish scientists are creating a GM cress that can identify landmines.

Perhaps not all GM crops are bad - as with many things in life there are good and bad aspects.
