Christmas Eve

Hello there ... Santa here.

I'll be setting out in a few minutes and if you want to follow my progress NORAD has set up their site again.

Jump to their radar and camera section here.

Hope you get to see me at some point despite the speed at which I have to move around - and thanks for all the food and drink you leave out - it's a long day and night for us and every snack helps us keep going.

A Merry Christmas to you all.

End of term - game day 5

Here's a bonus game for those who have kept watching this blog.

A remarkably good - and free - online adventure game, "Runescape". It has several servers, each with their own version of the world and with hundreds of players active at any time. Easy to get into with lots of on-screen help and a nice mouse-based interface.

If you've wondered what these sorts of games are like this might be a good time and place to have a go.

Website Design

The Internet is used by many people in many different ways and designing websites that are accessible to all is a difficult but worthwhile task. The National Library for the Blind (NLB) held an awards ceremony on December 2nd 2003 to celebrate the Visionary Design Awards. The short-list of sites can be seen here while the winners were:This BBC article has some useful links too as well as a list of 'tips' for website design.

Finally - try this W3C page about accessibility - this contains definitive information about such matters. Elsewhere on the W3C site you can find out even more about modern webpage design and features, you can even get their system to check your webpages too.

Computing Power

Pinched direct from the Beeb - a small sequence that illustrates how computing power has changed since the first electronic computers were designed.

Tomorrow - 12th December - sees the last day of the - rather short - United Nations (UN) conference titled 'World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)'. Intended to devise a global plan to ensure everyone has access to information and communication technologies. Alongside this is the 'World Electronic Media Forum' because the development of the information society is closely connected with radio, television and other mass media.

There are other links at the BBC iGeneration site including this one about recycling computers for re-use elsewhere in the world.

Space Invaders

According to this news.com story Taito are going to restart manufacture of the classic Space Invaders arcade game.

There's a nice little link in there to the KLOV site (Killer List Of Videogames) which has details of thousands of classic machines. My favourite would probably be Galaga.

Vince Lombardi

The England Rugby team are due to have their parade in London so today seems an appropriate day to point to this site.

In case you are unaware of it, Lombardi is/was the inspiration for England coach Clive Woodward.

If Microsoft Built Cars ...

This site has a list of 20 things that might happen if Microsoft built cars.

With the state of our own system this might be renamed "if anyone involved in computers built cars" - oops.
